Mixed methods is a research approach or methodology that collects and analyses both quantitative and qualitative data; and integrates the two data sets to yield results.6 The central premise of mixed methods is that data integration provides a better understanding of the problem than either approach alone. Importantly, mixed methods employs both rigourous quantitative and qualitative research techniques, utilizes multiple methods (e.g. intervention trials, psychometrically valid measures, in-depth interviews, focus groups), intentionally integrates or combines these methods to draw on the strengths of each, and frames the research within a theoretical framework.5 By using all of the appropriate data collection and analytic tools available, mixed methods offsets the weaknesses of the individual quantitative or qualitative approach.
