To the Editor:

In the recently published article “Reading a Q Methodology Research Article,” Hensel and Toronto (2022) describe the use of this mixed methods approach, clarify the different stages, define specific terms and characteristics, and provide useful tips. Q methodology has been increasingly used in health care research and seems to be a good fit in nursing (Miguel et al., 2018; Miguel & Caldeira, 2021). We have used this methodology in PhD research.

In health care, and especially in nursing, complex and controversial issues are common. Understanding subjectivity is paramount in determining patients' views toward holistic care. Nursing care is focused on human responses to health and illness transitions (Miguel & Caldeira, 2021). These responses may involve subjective phenomena that are difficult to measure or understand. Q methodology facilitates the study of subjective characteristics of human behavior (Yeun, 2021). Underrepresented patient populations who often do not have a voice can be included to gain their perspectives (Churruca et al., 2021). The card sorting technique has allowed patients with head and neck cancer to participate (Merrick & Farrell, 2012), and this method has been defined as inclusive from an ethical perspective (Miguel & Caldeira, 2021).

Q methodology can be used in health education, nursing practice, mental health, and areas such as chronic disease, end-of-life care, primary care, health care technology, and health system planning (Churruca et al., 2021). Thus, there are many opportunities for its application in nursing research.

We thank Hensel and Toronto (2022) for providing more knowledge about Q methodology as a new way to improve nursing research.
