What is a super hospital?

It is widely acknowledged that if a hospital with 45 disciplines has 3 of them ranking top 3 among the nation, it is a good hospital.

What about such hospital of which all disciplines rank top 3 nationwide? Can it be called super hospital?

This is how Xiaoming Shen, Hainan Province Governor, described the concept of super hospital at the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2018. Boao Super Hospital, supported by the “Nine Suggestions” issued by the State Council, with China’s leading medical experts and innovative operation model, has become a hot topic from the day it was launched.

Located in Hainan Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone, Boao Super Hospital aims to offer high-end medical services to the public and become an alternative to top overseas hospitals.

About 600,000 people from China traveled overseas for medical treatment in 2016 due to the unavailability of the latest drugs and equipment, Hainan Governor Xiaoming Shen said at a news conference in March.

Over the past 10 years, patients on the mainland have had to wait five to seven years longer for some major new drugs than patients in Europe and the United States because of lengthy approval procedures, according to the China Drug Administration.

Now, medical institutions at the Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone in Boao, where the Boao Super Hospital is located, can get speedy approvals from the Hainan provincial government to import sophisticated medical equipment that is urgently needed, according to a statement released by the State Council, China's Cabinet.

More than 10 patients underwent surgery at the hospital during its first week after the facility opened on March 31.
